Greater Manchester expands its range of recyclable materials

RECYCLE for Greater Manchester is set to expand the range of materials that can be recycled at its recycling centres. This decision comes after new figures show an increase in recycling across the city region. As a trial, residents in the area can now recycle hard plastics like old garden furniture and broken toys.

The US is set to invest $370 billion in climate action

Joe Biden, the president of the US, is set to sign a new legislation which will help the US to lower its carbon emissions by 40% by 2030. The legislation will do this by devoting $370 billion to climate change policies. Some of these include developing tax credits for renewable energy, and improving air quality in low- income communities.

Indigenous community in Ecuador wins battle to protect land

The Shuar Indigenous community in Ecuador have been fighting for over a decade to protect their land from deforestation, mining and pollution.

They have finally managed to win the legal battle which will protect their ancestral land, the Tiwi Nunka Forest, against future exploitation. This means that the community is free to sustainably manage the local natural resources as they see fit.

 

Shops in France to keep doors shut to save energy

A new law has just been passed in France which means all air-conditioned shops will need to keep their doors closed or risk being fined. Open doors in air-conditioned buildings can lead to 20% more energy consumption which is a huge waste. This new law will help to tackle both climate change and the energy crisis.

Nepal tripled its tiger population since 2010

There is some roaring good news in Nepal as they celebrate their major conservation success by tripling their tiger population.

They were one of the 13 tiger range countries that pledged in 2010 to double the global tiger population by 2022. There are now officially 355 wild tigers in the country compared to 125 in 2010.

 

Mayor of London unveils new urban tree planting package

The mayor of London has announced that £3.1 million funding will be provided to support tree planting around the city. The decision has come after the record breaking heatwave in the UK, as by planting more trees it can provide more shade, create a cooling effect and improve air quality.
