A 16-year-old girl turns plastic into ethical souvenirs

Sydney Steenland has been living on a boat since she was a little child. When travelling the world together with her parents, she noticed that no matter how beautiful the country she was visiting was, there would always be tonnes of unnecessary plastic laying around.

Sydney and her family made the decision to launch a social entrepreneurial project after seeing first-hand the magnitude of plastic waste in the waterways across the world. The Sea Monkey Project recycles used plastic and converts it into morally responsible souvenirs. The project has organised close to 10,000 educational seminars and recycled more than 22,500 items.

A lost species of iguana spotted on Galapágos Islands.

A rare species of iguana has been “reborn” on the Galapágos Islands for the first time in nearly 200 years! It was thought the reptile was locally extinct, as the last available record mentioning the iguana from Santiago Island dates to 187 years ago.

However, thousands of the animals were brought back to the islands three years ago, and recent photos show that the lizard is reproducing again.

Galápagos National Park made the decision to reintroduce the species on Santiago Island in order to help in its protection. Fortunately, the mission ended with great success, resulting in over 3,000 new iguanas.

Red panda has been born in English zoo

Paradise Wildlife Park in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, welcomed a red panda cub in July. The Little Red was born to mother Tilly, and father Nam Pang who sadly died a month before the cub’s arrival. The parents were part of an international breeding programme for red pandas, and it was the first time in four years they had successfully conceived. Due to the passing of Little Red’s father, the zoo has referred its birth to ‘a symbol of hope’. The cub’s sex has not yet been determined by the keepers, but the zoo intends to do so when Little Red turns six months old.
