Social model of disability – Harriet Street update

The social model of disability is the view that societal barriers and attitudes are the biggest contribution to limitations and exclusions. By removing these barriers and promoting inclusivity, society can enable people with disabilities to fully participate and thrive.

At ForHousing we are committed to the removal of barriers and embrace this model of thinking.

Earlier this year, following lots of feedback from tenants and colleagues, one of our team, Sean raised a problem with a steep and narrow walk way to Harriet Street.

The walkway to Harriet Street sheltered accommodation was causing people issues. Some were even reluctant to leave their homes due to fear of falling. We listened to our tenants and we acted upon their concerns. It was agreed through meetings and surveys that the path will be widened and the uneven surface will be levelled out as well as being resurfaced to ensure it was suitable for wheelchair users. A handrail was also installed to help with walking.

Watch the video below to see the full process of how Sean initially raised the issue to completion.

Equity, diversity and inclusion is something we are really passionate about at ForHousing. We are committed to provide safe, well maintained homes and deliver customer focused, equitable and efficient services. The social model of disability helps us to frame our thinking to support us to deliver this commitment.
