Leonard's story

We work in partnership to make sure that every tenant feels safe and secure in their home and in their community.

The Police advised that they needed our help with Leonard, a vulnerable tenant who they believed was a victim of cuckooing, which is where people take over someone’s home and use it for criminal activity like dealing drugs. The Police had arranged to move Leonard to emergency temporary accommodation for his safety.

From talking to Leonard, we found out that he had become very vulnerable, with alcohol and drug dependencies, and needed a lot of support. Working with him, we contacted Adult Social Care to make sure he could be allocated a social worker and we also worked with the Police to make sure he had all his essential items and prescription medication during his move to temporary accommodation. We fully supported the criminal investigation by sharing information and identifying other potential victims of cuckooing, making joint home visits to make sure this was the case and acting where appropriate.

We worked with our partners to provide a more suitable – and permanent – home where Leonard could feel safe. As Leonard told us he needed extra help to maintain his tenancy, we also made sure he had the right support in place to improve his life going forwards, by making referrals to drug and alcohol services, referring him to our tenancy sustainment service and continuing to work with Adult Social Care.
