How to prevent damp and condensation in your home

We’ve introduced a new process dedicated to the way we handle damp and condensation in your home. All ForHousing staff were trained on how to diagnose your repair and can advise you on the next steps. You’ll also be able to report issues to any member of staff, not just the service centre, without being passed on to someone else.

We also aim to inspect all damp issues within 10 days and complete the works in a further 40 days.

Here are some top tips on how to prevent damp and condensation in the home:

  • Regularly clean away mould.
  • Make sure windows with trickle vents installed remain open.
  • Close the kitchen and bathroom doors during use to prevent warm moist air circulating round the house, even if the kitchen or bathroom has an extractor fan.
  • If possible, dry washing outdoors on a line – clothes will dry quicker and it’s also better for the environment. If you can’t dry outside, use a clothes airer inside the bathroom with the door closed and a window open or an extractor fan on.
  • In very cold weather, keep low background heating on all day, even when there is no one at home. This is a more energy-efficient way of heating your home.
  • Open windows when carrying out any moisture-generating activity such as cooking and bathing.

We want to provide the right support for you if you experience damp and condensation issues in your home, so here are just a few ways we can help you:

Damp

  • Installing a new damp-proof course to create a barrier and prevent water from the ground rising up.
  • Remove and re-plaster affected areas.
  • Replace any rotted woodwork affected i.e., skirting boards.

Condensation

  • Inspect the loft area to ensure the insulation is dry, sufficient and covers all areas.
  • Check that fans and vents are operating effectively.
  • Install bathroom or kitchen extractor fans, trickle vents on windows, and additional condensation vents where none are present.

Please get in touch with us today if you’d like to talk about damp and condensation issues in your home and we’ll work together to find a solution that works for you.
