How to recognise false Direct Debit claims

If you’re contacted in person or on social media about making quick money by claiming back refunds on your Direct Debit payments including your rent, this can be a scam.

The criminals will ask for your personal and bank account details, which they will use to make a Direct Debit refund request with your bank.

If the refund is made the criminal will take a cut of this money as payment for letting you know about the service.

You will also be in debt with the companies who you made these payments to, and you will still need to repay the debt.

This can mean you are at risk of losing your home and goods or being taken to court.

If you share your bank details with a scammer, it means they can take money from your account in future without your permission.

At ForHousing, we will never contact you asking for your personal banking information over the phone.

You can keep yourself safe from scammers by following the below steps:

  • Watch out for people contacting you on social media about schemes to make quick and easy money – it is likely they are a scam.
  • Never give out your bank account information, including login details, passwords, or one-time passcodes to anyone.
  • If the offer sounds too good to be true it probably is.

If you believe you are a victim of Direct Debit fraud please contact us and your bank
