Management moves

Sometimes your home may no longer be right for you. If there are no other suitable housing options available, we may be able to consider a management move.

A management move is when we help a tenant move to another home because their current home is no longer suitable and there are no other housing options available.

We look at every request individually and will support you to understand all the options open to you.

For most people, the quickest way to move home is through Choice Based Lettings (CBL) or Mutual Exchange. A management move is only considered where these options are not suitable.

Who might qualify for a management move?

Management moves are only approved in limited circumstances, and each request is considered on its own.

A management move may be considered if, for example:

  • You urgently need adapted or supported accommodation and this cannot be provided in your current home (with written confirmation from an Occupational Therapist)
  • Your home has been seriously affected by fire, flooding or another incident outside your control and you cannot return for four months or more
  • Major repairs are needed, meaning your home cannot be safely lived in for four months or more.

When a management move can’t be approved

We understand these situations can be worrying, and we’ll always try to help you understand what support is available.

We don’t have access to emergency accommodation. If you’re at immediate risk and cannot safely stay in your home, you should contact your local council’s housing options team for urgent support:

Management moves can’t be approved where the situation involves:

  • Domestic abuse
  • Serious anti-social behaviour
  • Threats to life
  • Cuckooing
  • Damp and mould – we’ll arrange an inspection and repairs, and you may be asked to move temporarily while work is completed
  • Overcrowding – you should apply through Choice Based Lettings and consider registering for a mutual exchange

In these situations, your local council is responsible for carrying out a homelessness or safety assessment. They may need information from the police or other support agencies to put the right help in place.

If you’re experiencing domestic abuse or do not feel safe, please visit our Domestic abuse support page for confidential advice and support.

If you’re unsure who to contact or need help accessing support, we’re here to help. There are many ways to get in touch, visit our contact us page to find out how to access support.

If your management move is approved

If approved, you’ll be added to a waiting list for a suitable home. Unfortunately, we can’t give timescales as this depends on the availability of suitable homes.

Please make sure we have up-to-date information about:

  • Your household and needs
  • Bedroom requirements
  • Any mobility or adaptation needs
  • Preferred areas (first and second choice)

We can’t accept requests for a specific street or neighbourhood.

Adaptations

If you need adaptations or level access, we’ll need written confirmation from a medical professional and an Occupational Therapy report

Your request may be put on hold for up to three months while this information is gathered. If we don’t receive it within that time, your application may be withdrawn. You can find out more about adaptations on our website.

Appeals

If you don’t agree with a decision about a management move, you can ask us to review it.

Just speak to your Housing Officer and let them know you’d like a review. Your case will be looked at by a manager who wasn’t involved in the original decision, and we’ll usually let you know the outcome within 10 working days.

If a decision relates to your local council’s Choice Based Lettings scheme, any appeals about registration or priority are handled by the council. You can find details on their website:
