Heat your home safely this Winter

Winter is well and truly here, and lots of us will be looking to get cosy. Electric blankets and portable heaters are a good way to stay warm, so we want to share some ways you can use them safely to prevent accidents and fires.

Here are some simple tips to keep in mind:

  • Store blankets properly: Never leave electric blankets folded. This can damage internal wiring. Instead, store them flat or rolled up.
  • Unplug before bed: Unless your blanket has a thermostat control for safe all-night use, always unplug it before you go to sleep.
  • Avoid second-hand blankets: Do not buy used electric blankets and check yours regularly for signs of wear and tear.
  • Secure heaters: Keep portable heaters against a wall to prevent them from tipping over.
  • Keep clear of flammable items: Make sure heaters are away from curtains, furniture, and other flammable materials. Never use them to dry clothes.
