December can be an exciting time to spend with friends and family, but it can also mean an increased risk with common electrical items. At ForHousing, your safety is our priority and we’re sharing some simple tips to keep your home safe while you celebrate:
Check your Christmas lights 🎄
Before you hang your lights, inspect them for any frayed wires, broken bulbs, or loose connections. If you spot any damage, avoid using them.
Don’t overload sockets 🔥
It’s tempting to plug in multiple decorations, but overloading sockets can cause overheating and fires. Use a surge-protected extension lead if needed, and never daisy-chain extension cords (plugging an extension cord into another).
Switch off when you’re away 🏠
Always turn off lights and decorations when you leave the house or go to bed. It’s a simple step that reduces risk and saves energy.
Keep electricals away from water 💧
Avoid placing lights or electrical decorations near sinks, baths, or outdoor areas where they could get wet. Water and electricity don’t mix.
Use indoor and outdoor lights correctly 🌟
Only use lights designed for outdoor use when decorating outside. Indoor lights aren’t weatherproof and can be dangerous if exposed to rain or damp conditions.
