The history of Stockbridge Village

Stockbridge Village, formerly Cantril Farm, is named after Stock Bridge, a historical bridge over the River Alt.

From the first written records of the land in the Doomsday book (1086), the land was mainly agricultural tenant farms owned by a series of noble estates until the 1930s, it was then sold to the Liverpool Corporation to help with urban overcrowding in Liverpool.

Stockbridge Village housing started to be built into a neighbourhood in the 1950s, with the first families moving in in the 1960s. It became part of Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council in 1974. By the 1980s, debt in the area had caused a backlog of repairs with a considerable unemployment problem. Following both local and national concern, it became Stockbridge Village in 1983, and regeneration efforts were made in the area that have continued since.
