Stanney Grange Improvement Scheme – everything you need to know

ForHousing and Cheshire West and Chester Council are working in partnership with Liberty to undertake neighbourhood improvements within the Stanney Grange area in Ellesmere Port.

Prior to any work commencing, tenants and leaseholders were asked about their neighbourhood, and the type of improvement works that would benefit the area.

The main feedback informed that this neighbourhood would benefit from:

  • Additional car parking spaces
  • Improvements to communal areas within low-rise blocks to include better lighting and safer doors
  • Improvements to front garden boundaries of council homes

It was also clear that tenants and leaseholders were concerned about the environment and wanted to see it free from fly tipping and litter.

So, where are we up to so far?

We embarked on a neighbourhood improvement scheme in February 2024 which is being undertaken in three phases to minimise disruption and ensure overall satisfaction.

Phase 1: Garage demolition to four garage sites to provide additional car parking.

Before…

After…

Phase 2: Boundary replacements to council homes which replaces the old wooden fencing with metal railings and gates.

We are pleased to say that we have received positive feedback about these works:

“We are so very pleased; they are such an improvement to the wood, and they look so stylish.  The guys fitting them were also so lovely.  Very pleased.”

“Very respectful and prompt.  Made me feel at ease as I was extremely anxious about the work.”

Phase 3: Internal and external refurbishments to low-rise blocks which includes decorations, jet wash cleaning of communal areas, some lighting upgrades, signage installations, external rear yard gate replacements. Doors to individual property doors were replaced in recent years, collectively brightening up the communal areas.

Who is doing the work?

The ForHousing Team designed the project specification, surveyed the site to determine the measurements and scope of works, put together the tender package, and is managing the build process and budget control – Garry Taylor Planning and Delivery Surveyor – says: “I have greatly enjoyed working on this project as the design reflects the true nature of what we were trying to achieve following consultation and the feedback given.”

The Liberty Team are responsible for managing the day to day running of the site through the build process, overseeing the works subcontractors carry out and quality control. Martin Hazel – site manager says – It’s been great to be involved in a project to rejuvenate the environment of this area.

Jennie Parker is Liberty’s Tenant Liaison officer and managers communication between the site team and residents, ensures residents are kept updated and satisfied with work. Jennie says: “Residents have been so accommodating and grateful for improvements….it is encouraging to see those making a huge effort to get their gardens ‘summer ready’, spurred on by the installation of new railings.”

Your community

During Spring of 2024 we listened to residents’ concerns about litter and fly tipping in the area.

Working with partners and the community, we delivered an environmental day which proved to be a huge success. Volunteers and staff took to the streets to clear the unsightly grot spots, collecting over 50 bags of rubbish.

Your community

A local tenant, who is passionate about her area said “It was good to work with some of the community partners including ForHousing, the Police, Asda, and Chester Zoo, The Wombles who showed us that they are keen to be more involved in the estate.”

Contractors involved in the scheme are not just helping to improve the area, they are also making valuable contributions to the local community

Stanney Grange Community Centre were very grateful for donations from Ian Williams who  brought some festive cheer to all at the 2024 Christmas Party. Ian Williams continue to show their support by undertaking painting work to the community centre and providing further food donations.

Residents around the Stanney are taking action to help make the area better for all and we are delighted to share with you Sandra’s sentiments as she helps develop the communal garden in front of her block.

“I had this idea of bringing the garden back to life… it looked tired and depressing especially since lockdown, it was something positive to do and helped to reduce feelings of isolation.”

“One of the neighbours lends a helping hand and it helps with community spirit. When passers by notice how lovely the garden looks, they stop and have a friendly chat commenting on what a difference it makes.”

“It’s attracting so much more wildlife, I’ve noticed jack daws, pigeons, robins, butterflies…hopefully this idea of gardening will rub off onto others and inspires them to do the same.”

“I’m looking forward to working on new ideas on to brighten up the communal spaces for the enjoyment of everyone.”

Paula has recently set up Friends of the Stanney and was inspired by her passion for seeing the community thrive and improve. Paula says: “Friends of the Stanney is a is safe space. We’re to talk and everyone is welcome come share your ideas on activities such as clean up days or events to bring the community together.” Having recently won an a Be Proud Award for fostering a sense of community, Paula would love to hear from you and says that by working together, we can do so much more.
