Volunteer John is at the heart of his community

John Carroll, who is 53 and lives in Stockbridge, has worked tirelessly over the last seven years to support his community.

He has become the face of the Stockbridge Village Community Hub, which holds lots of different events, group sessions and learning opportunities.

John is always there to support the activities, and is the friendly face that people see when they knock on the door to find out what’s going on in the community. He is a big part of the reason the Hub has become as successful as it is.

He started volunteering on environmental projects including North West in Bloom and the Village Farm Orchard project, where fruit trees were planted throughout the estate. Since then he’s also worked on community gardens, gala days and the CLAHRC project, which aims to understand how the challenges of everyday life affect health and wellbeing in their area.

Most recently, he’s been working with The Big Help Project to offer support with their food bank through the COVID-19 pandemic.

John said: “Working in the Hub gives me a focus and is good for my mental health and wellbeing. It helps to de-stress me, keep me active and healthy and means I meet lots of new people.

“I started volunteering as I want to help out the local community. I feel proud to be able to support everyone who comes to the Hub. I've seen a lot of change in the community and I’m happy that I've been able to support the positive change in the area.”
