Tori takes action in Fitton Hill

Tori Smith is 38 and lives on Fitton Hill in Oldham.

She’s been an active member of the Fitton Hill in Action Group (FHIAG) since she joined in August 2017. By the September she’d been appointed as Secretary to the group.

Tori is the driving force behind the group, which works alongside ForHousing to provide events and activities for people living on the estate.

She provides support and advice to other members, plans all the meetings, creates action plans, takes and distributes minutes, designs flyers and tickets and generally keeps the group together as a tight unit.

Over recent years the group has successfully delivered lots of events, including gala days, family Halloween parties, over 50s Christmas parties, Christmas markets and St George’s Day celebrations.

Tori is the main carer for her daughter Elizabeth. As Elizabeth has grown up, Tori has been left with more time on her hands and wanted to use her knowledge and experience to help others.

Volunteering has helped her connect with other people, and she’s made some new friends. She’s also developed new skills such as event planning and writing funding bids. This will be helpful for her in the future if she decides to go back to work.

Tori said: “Volunteering has given me the opportunity to meet new friends and become more involved on the estate. It’s given me purpose again and it feels very rewarding and fulfilling to give back to the community and help others.”
