Tenant X is an older woman living with dementia. She lives with her two sons: Son A (her main carer) and Son B (who has additional learning needs).
Son A was doing his best, but it was a lot to manage. Over time, some parts of the home and garden became difficult to keep on top of. The garden was heavily overgrown, there was fly-tipping, and the sheds were packed with their late father’s DIY equipment, which they couldn’t access or move.
This wasn’t something we could (or should) treat as a tenancy breach. Tenant X couldn’t understand the situation because of her dementia, so we worked with the family and Adult Social Care to agree a supportive plan:
- Adult Social Care (ASC) commissioned additional care.
- ASC funded an internal clean to help the household get back on track.
- Through the LiveWell fund, ForHousing supported the tenant by clearing and cutting back the garden, including providing two skips.
With this support in place, Son A is now able to manage day-to-day caring more comfortably, with help from other carers. The garden is also under control again, so the family can spend time outside – which has been a real boost for their wellbeing.
