John turned his passion for photography into an exciting new business idea with help from Do Your Own Thing
Young creative John Hoey has been working with the Do Your Own Thing programme for the past six years to help plan and achieve his goals to make his dream of being his own boss come true.
The budding photographer says that his initial attempts to set up his own dance studio in his home neighbourhood of Little Hulton have taught him some valuable lessons.
“I originally started working with the team when I was a teenager and wanted to open my own Dance Studio,” he said. “I was too young at the time and wasn’t ready to run by own business but it was a great experience that helped me learn a lot.”
The ForHousing Do Your Own Thing programme helps you make more out of what you love doing, by turning ideas into income and fuelling people’s potential.
John, 22, was encouraged by the Do Your Own Thing team to continue developing his business plans and is now working to turn his love of photography into an exciting new business.
“I discovered a new passion for photography and was put in touch with a mentor through Do Your Own Thing. They are enabling me to develop my business idea, which is all about photography and film making for local artists in the community.”
While he’s still early on in the process, John’s creativity and flair are starting to flourish and his business is already getting noticed.
He recently ran a photo booth with a twist at a wedding, which featured a person inside with props and all the guests thoroughly enjoyed it.
“The next steps are to bid for funding and if that’s successful, then I can take my business to a whole new level,” John explains.
As a qualified dance teacher and having studied performing arts and media, John is still pursuing his first love and his long-term aim is to integrate photography and dance together into his business.
“I’ve learnt so much through Do Your Own Thing”, he adds. “I would recommend to anyone that has a business idea, no matter how unusual, to look into the scheme.
“The support I’ve received has given me confidence that I can achieve my potential and fulfil my goals.”
Our Do Your Own Thing programme helps fuel your potential, explore possibilities and develop your ideas before taking steps into self-employment.
