Jo finds joy in making people smile

Jo Oliver, who is 53 and lives in Fitton Hill in Oldham, has been volunteering on her estate since last summer.

Jo attends Salvation Army church services which take place at The Brew Community Café.

She became a Salvation Army fundraising volunteer in August 2019, helping to run table-top sales.

More recently, Jo has been supporting the charity by helping with their response to the COVID-19 pandemic. She is giving her time to put together care, activity and ‘happy’ packs which are distributed across Fitton Hill.

These ranged from food parcels to activities for adults and children and treats like coffee sachets and biscuits.

She’s also a member of a group which take part in twice weekly sing-a-longs on the estate to combat loneliness amongst older residents.

Jo said: “I volunteer because I get joy out of seeing people being happy and getting a smile back at the end of it.

“I’ve made some valuable friends and have gained so much more confidence by being involved.”

Jo lives with her daughter and helps to look after her grandchildren, taking them to family and pre-school activities on the estate.
