“Having the security of a full-time tenancy has made a massive difference to my life!”

We believe that everyone deserves access to the same opportunities in life, no matter their previous circumstances and background.

At ForHousing, we are proud to support those who currently serve or have previously served our nation as part of the armed forces community.

Earlier this year, we signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant, which is a promise to ensure that those who serve or have served and their families, are treated fairly within their community.

We worked with Dennis*, an army veteran who had served in the Falklands, Northern Ireland and the Middle East, after he was unfortunately made homeless by his previous landlord.

Before Dennis came to us, his landlord began making unreasonable demands like significantly raising his rent without warning and refusing to carry out repairs to his home. Unfortunately, the landlord’s intimating behaviour eventually forced Dennis into leaving his home.

As Dennis owns two dogs, finding temporary accommodation was difficult and he resorted to living in a tent in the countryside for a short while.

We really wanted to help Dennis find a safe place for him to call home and take positive steps forward so he could live a fulfilled and happy life.

At first, we were able to offer Dennis temporary accommodation in one of our homes that we rent to Salford City Council, and after discussions we were able to offer him a starter tenancy which gave him the chance to secure a full, permanent ForHousing tenancy.

Dennis said: “Having the security of a life-time tenancy has made a massive difference to my life! I absolutely love my flat and I intend to stay here for a very long time.

“I’ve made friends with lots of my neighbours which has really boosted my mental health and my stress levels have reduced hugely too.

“I was surprised as well to find that my physical health has improved enormously too, I love taking my dogs for walks in a field nearby!”

We’re so glad that Dennis is now thriving and that both his life and wellbeing has improved now that he has somewhere safe and secure to call home.

We will continue to support veterans just like Dennis find homes where they can feel comfortable and content. If you’d like to know more about the help we can give to members of the armed forces community, please visit our website https://www.forhousing.co.uk/armed-forces-support
